“No, Lizzy. You can’t come here, and I can’t tell you where I am,” I said for the tenth time. My best friend either didn’t want to hear me or didn’t care if she got killed, but I did.

“Bitch, I swear to God. I’m still having nightmares from hearing that your house was shot up on the news. I thought you were all dead.”

“I know, and I’m sorry that I didn’t contact you right away so that you knew I was okay. But I just…I was….”

“Zip it. I don’t care if you were crawling through a barbwire field filled with landmines and being chased by aliens that wanted to impregnate you.” Well, if that wasn’t an image. “Do you understand that I love you, and you scared me? That’s unacceptable because then I become a needy bitch, and I hate myself, and it’s all your fault.” I bit my lip to keep from laughing because, at this point, I couldn’t tell what would set her off. A squeak slipped out. “Don’t you dare snicker at me. You won’t have to worry about whoever is trying to kill you ‘cause I will hunt you down if you laugh at me.”

That was it. I burst out laughing, and her ranting at me only made it worse. I sobered up quickly when I heard her crying.

“Lizzy, don’t cry, please. You know that I love you, and the only reason I can’t tell you where I am or give you the number to this special phone Myles gave me is to keep you safe.”

“But how will I get a hold of you? And I hardly saw you and may never see you again.”

“You are never getting rid of me. I’ll call as much as I can, and as soon as I’m safe, I’ll find a way to bring you here for a visit. Then you can meet everyone. I miss you already, and I really am sorry that I scared you.”

There was a dramatic sigh on the other end of the line. “I know you are, and I know it wasn’t your fault, but my heart stopped beating. I swear it did. I don’t ever want to feel like that again.”

“I love you to bits, and I will call you again soon, but my time is almost up,” I said, looking at the stopwatch on my other new phone that Blake’s dad got me. It was under his company name. I had to transfer all my contacts, but I wasn’t allowed to give anyone the number. Especially anyone who could be put in danger. That list was small, but Lizzy was on it.

“Alright. I’m going to sulk and pout my ass off, but I love you, Boo. I really do.”

“I know. I love you, too. Now I have to go.”

“Fine, be safe.”

“I will. I promise.” I hung up before she could think of something else to say that would keep me on the line and then promptly turned the phone off as Myles had instructed.
